Focus and Scope

da Vinci's Notebook is a peer-reviewed, open access journal published annually by the College of Physical and Engineering Science, University of Guelph, Canada. Written by undergraduate students in the sciences, engineering, and related disciplines, it presents fact-based articles explaining the science of selected topics to a broad, non-specialist audience. The journal's Section Editors and Scientific Advisory Board members are actively involved in research and teaching at the University of Guelph. da Vinci's Notebook was created in 2008, to coincide with the introduction of the university's new B.Sc. (Nanoscience) program. The inaugural volume, Vol 1 (2009), introduces readers to the emerging field of nanoscience and presents the best papers by student authors in the freshman course “Introduction to Nanoscience.”

Peer Review Process

A. Only students currently enrolled in NANO*1000 are eligible to submit manuscripts to the "NANO*1000: Introduction to Nanoscience" section of this journal.

B. Submissions to da Vinci's Notebook must be made via the journal’s online form. All authors of manuscripts thus submitted will receive confirmation by email.

C. Qualifying manuscripts undergo a three-step review process:

1) Double-blind, peer-review. Each manuscript is assigned three reviewers for a double-blind peer review. Reviewers’ comments will be sent to the contributors by email.

2) Review by Section Editor(s), Science Writing Specialist and Librarian. Each manuscript is reviewed by at least one of the Section Editors and two members of the library's Learning and Curriculum Support Team--the Science Writing Specialist and a Learning and Curriculum Support Librarian. Formative feedback from each of these specialists (on scientific content, academic writing, and citing and referencing, respectively) will be sent to the authors by email.

Contributors have two weeks to respond to the reviewers’ comments and submit a revised manuscript. They must attach a cover letter to the revised submission that details how they have addressed the reviews comments.

3) Final Review by Section Editors. Each revised manuscript is reviewed by the Section Editors who make the final decision about publication. Successful authors will receive email notification of the Section Editors’ decision, along with the details of the Section Editors' reviews.

Publication Frequency
